UK supermarkets not doing enough to tackle antibiotic misuse, report says

A new report has revealed that UK supermarkets are failing to adequately address the misuse of antibiotics in farm animals, potentially contributing to the growing threat of antibiotic resistance.

There are growing concerns over the threat of antibiotic resistance and a new report has highlighted UK’s largest supermarket chains aren’t ensuring their suppliers are using antibiotics in the most responsible way.

Significant gaps have been identified by Alliance to Save Our Antibiotics (ASOA) when examining the practices of the biggest supermarket chains and most supermarket policies cover only their own-brand goods in the ASOA report.

The overuse and careless use of antibiotics around the world is driving antimicrobial resistance and Ron Daniels, the vice-president of the Global Sepsis Alliance, said “Antibiotics are the bedrock on which we have built much of modern medicine. Without these vital medicines the risk of routine procedures, like elective surgery or cancer chemotherapy, will skyrocket,”

The consequence of rising AMR is that people are facing life-threating infections and the whole society needs to urgently address the rising rates of AMR including farming.
