New AMR National Action Plan 2024-2029
The UK Government has published a new five-year national action planOver the next five years, the UK government will be implementing its second antimicrobial resistance (AMR) national action plan to confront the growing threat of drug-resistant infections. Building upon the successes and lessons learned from the first plan (2019-2024), this new strategy outlines a comprehensive, One Health approach to tackling AMR across human health, animal health, agriculture, and the environment.
The plan is structured around four key themes: reducing the need for and unintentional exposure to antimicrobials; optimising the use of antimicrobials; investing in innovation, supply and access; and being a good global partner. Within these themes, there are nine strategic outcomes underpinned by thirty commitments that the government will undertake to achieve the desired results.
In terms of impacts and ramifications for animals and agriculture, the plan sets out several important initiatives. Firstly, it aims to support the veterinary profession and animal keepers in implementing good husbandry practices, biosecurity measures, and evidence-based strategies to prevent endemic diseases and reduce the need for antimicrobials in livestock. This includes working with industry to develop training, guidance, and tools to encourage responsible use and disposal of antimicrobials.
Secondly, the plan emphasises the importance of strengthening surveillance systems to monitor antibiotic use and resistance in food-producing animals, companion animals, and horses. Enhanced data collection and sharing will enable the development of targeted interventions to improve animal health and welfare while reducing reliance on antibiotics. The strategy also recognises the need for continued investment in research and innovation to develop new vaccines, diagnostics, and alternative therapies for animal use. Collaborations between government, academia, and industry will be crucial in overcoming market barriers and ensuring that these tools reach the market in an equitable and sustainable manner.
The UK remains committed to being a global leader in promoting the responsible use of antimicrobials in farming. This involves advocating for international alignment of regulations, supporting the adoption of best practices such as the Codex Alimentarius guidelines, and assisting other countries in strengthening their animal health systems and access to essential veterinary medicines.
The UK’s 2024-2029 national action plan to confront AMR represents an ambitious and holistic strategy that recognises the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health. By setting clear outcomes, fostering collaborations, and investing in research and innovation, the plan aims to preserve the effectiveness of antimicrobials, protect animal welfare, and ensure the long-term sustainability of the UK’s livestock and agriculture sectors.
We at AGA2tech are excited to consider the important part our technology can have in meeting these goals and supporting the UK government in its efforts to combat AMR in animals and agriculture.
